1. Between 2015 and 2018, the Border Security Force (BSF) arrested around 478 Rohingya along the India-Bangladesh border, with 230 held in 2018 alone. While the number of arrests in 2015 and 2016 were 54 and 71, respectively, it rose to 123 in 2017. The Rohingyas in India are a persecuted Myanmarese minority that has taken shelter, and a hot political issue. Their fate is pending with the cases in Supreme Court. 2. Lapses in following a well-defined protocol for blood donation and transfusion have led to a series of tragedies in Tamil Nadu. At least 30 indigenous groups, including the North East Students’ Organisation, have called an 11-hour shutdown on January 8 to protest the Narendra Modi government’s move to have the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, passed in the parliament. They fear that many illegal Hindus (from Bangladesh) living in the region will not easily get permanent Indian citizenship, and the ethnic composition may change. 4. Venezuela's Opposition-controlled National Assembly declared Nicolas Maduro's presidency illegitimate as he was about to begin a second term in office. Maduro had forcibly taken control of many institutions and stamped out all opposition voices. The average income levels have dropped fast and there is widespread misery. US President Donald Trump told Congressional leaders that he is ready to shut-down the federal government for months or even years if Democrats do not allot money to build a border wall with Mexico while warning he may invoke emergency provisions. 6. The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are likely to conclude the seat-sharing talks for the Lok Sabha election on January 6. Senior leaders said a consensus had been reached on 40 seats and a final meeting would take place at the residence of Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil. (Indian Politics)

7. 25-year-old Lucas Barron will be the first person with Down Syndrome taking part in the 5,000-km Dakar rally. It is starting in Peru. He will be co-pilot for his father Jacques. The rally will long for 10-day and 70% of it will be raced over sand. (People and Personalities)

8. Prime Minister Modi visited Baripada and dedicated to the nation, the Balasore-Haldia-Durgapur section of the Paradip-Haldia-Durgapur LPG pipeline of IOCL. He also inaugurated the Multi Modal Logistic Park at Balasore, and six Passport Sewa Kendras. He flagged off the second passenger train from Tatanagar to Badampahar. (Infrastructure)

9. Tropical Storm Pabuk has been downgraded to a depression and is moving into the Andaman Sea after claiming three lives as it swept across Thailand. Two elderly people drowned in Nakhon Si Thammarat, and a third person died after his fishing boat capsized in Pattani, according to Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. 11. Another tiger has been found dead near Motha village of Chinkhaldara Territorial area under east Melgha divison. It is the fourth tiger dead found in 6 days in Maharashtra. Its body parts was intact, so prima facie poaching has been ruled out. (Environment Ecology and Climate Change)

12. Economic Affairs Secretary S.C. Garg at a CII event said that the recent Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) crisis points to several lacunae in the regulation of non-banking finance companies as well as lack of data and interaction. The RBI has separately asked for tightening of regulation in these matters. (Governance and Institutions)

13. An increase in international crude oil price by $10 will impact headline inflation by 49-58 basis points, researchers of the Reserve Bank of India said in a report "The Impact of Crude Price Shock on India’s Current Account Deficit, Inflation and Fiscal Deficit". India remains hostage to the crude oil prices, as alternative means of energy are still being developed, including renewable energy (RE). Year 2018 saw a sudden depreciation in Indian Rupee due to sharp rise in crude prices.

14. Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) and Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications (RCom) have jointly written to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) seeking its clearance for the Rs.25,000 crore deal between the two companies, failing which RCom, with a total dues of Rs.45,000 crore, will have to face insolvency proceedings and RJIL’s operations may be impacted. Ericsson has separately asked the Supreme Court to jail Anil Ambani till all dues are cleared.

Absconding chairman of the defunct Kingfisher Airlines, Vijay Mallya, earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first person to be declared a "fugitive economic offender" by a special Mumbai Court, under the provisions of a tough new law enacted last year. He had recently offered to repay the principal amount to the Banks.
