Indian agencies will have to wait a little longer before Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case is extradited here from the U.S. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) team that was in the US a few days ago to seek the extradition of Rana, a close associate of David Coleman Headley, has been given an indication that Rana has to first complete his 14 year jail sentence. 3. The Election Commission has decided not to hold the Tiruvarur by-election, slated for January 28. Ever since the Commission announced a week ago that it would hold the by-election, sections of political parties had expressed reservations on the ground that the by-poll would come in the way of implementation of relief measures in areas hit by the Gaja cyclone. Two months after the West Bengal government denied any food scarcity as a possible cause of death of seven persons from a tribal community, a survey report has identified “food scarcity in varying degrees” in about 31% of tribal households in West Bengal. The study titled ‘An Inquiry into the world of the Adivasis of West Bengal’, conducted by Professor Amartya Sen’s Pratichi Institute and Asiatic Society. (Social Issues)

5. American airstrikes in Yemen killed a top al-Qaeda leader responsible for the deadly USS Cole bombing in 2000 in which 17 US sailors had lost their lives. Seventeen American sailors were killed and at least 40 others injured in the terrorist attack on the US Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Cole on October 12, 2000, while it was being refuelled in Yemen’s Aden harbour. 6. President Donald Trump said that the United States is now planning to install a steel barrier instead of a concrete wall along its border with Mexico. Prime Minister Theresa May said that Britain would be in uncharted territory if her Brexit deal is rejected by Parliament later this month, despite little sign that she has won over sceptical lawmakers. 10. A Saudi woman held at Bangkok airport said she would be killed if she was repatriated by Thai immigration officials. The incident comes against the backdrop on SA over its handling of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. 11. The India meteorological department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which is facing a cyclonic storm. According to details of assets declared by the chief minister of Bihar Mr. Nitish Kumar and his cabinet colleagues uploaded on the state government's website on January 3, owns movable and immovable assets worth Rs 56.18 lakh while his son Nishant is almost five times richer than him. Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi is also richer than his boss, with movable assets worth Rs 1.04 crore.
