1. The BJP government announced a 10% reservation for upper castes (or the unreserved category) exclusively with reference to their economic backwardness.This may run into rough weather if challenged in the Supreme Court. 2. Clarifying the reports that the RBI would be transferring anywhere between Rs. 30,000 and 40,000 crore to the Centre as interim dividend, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said that the RBI has not yet taken a decision regarding the quantum of the interim dividend it will transfer to the government. Since 2014, RBI has been transferring nearly 100% of its annual surplus to the government.(Governance and Institutions)

3. The government of India collected income tax revenue amounting Rs.7.43 trillion in April to Decenber 2018. It was 13.6% higher than collected in the same period of the previous financial year. Gross collection grew at 14.1 percent because of faster payouts of refunds. (Indian Economy)

An 18-year-old Saudi woman (Rahag Mohammed al-Qunun) who fled her Saudi family and barricaded herself inside a Bangkok airport hotelto prevent being expelled by Thai authorities, has left the airport after talks with the UN refugee agency UNHCR. Thai authorities said teen wouldn't be expelled. She wants to go to Australia, and has renounced Islam.. (People and Personalities / Religion)

5. The latest data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed that despite a significant rise in investment and manufacturing activities the economy is likely to grow at a slower pace in the current financial year (2018-19) than what was previously expected. (Indian Economy)

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 recommended that Assam government should help settle migrants “especially in places which are not densely populated, thus, causing lesser impact on the demographic changes and providing succour to the indigenous Assamese people.” The Bill paves way to grant citizenship to six religious minorities -- Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Parsis, Christians and Buddhists -- from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who came to India before 2014. India secured another legal victory in the U.K. as a judge at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court has said that the extradition of alleged bookie Sanjeev Chawla can proceed, and referred the case to Home Secretary Sajid Javid for a final decision. The development came at a procedural hearing on Monday before District Judge Rebecca Crane. (World Politics)

9. Essar Global Fund Ltd. , the holding company for the Essar group of companies, on January 7 repaid a debt of Rs.12,000 crore to its various Indian and foreign lenders. This is in addition to the Rs. 30,000 crore that it had repaid in August 2017 to various lenders from the proceeds of the Essar Oil sale. (Indian Economy)

10. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) pulled out of the BJP-led coalition government in Assam over the Citizenship Amendment Bill after its "last-ditch attempt to convince" the Centre to withdrew the proposed legislation failed. The proposed legislation seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. (Indian Politics)

11. Private FM channels will be able to broadcast All India Radio News from January 8. Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore will launch the sharing of news at a function in New Delhi. Colonel Rathore said that it is positive and welcome step as radio is the biggest mass medium for citizens. (Governance and Institutions)

13. The fourth and final Test between India and Australia in Sydney ended in a draw; India won the series (2-1) in Australia for the first time. No Indian team had won a  Test Series in Australia in 11 attempts before Virat Kohli's side won 2-1. (Entertainment Games and Sports)

14. RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said that dealing with issues of liquidity was one of the central bank's biggest priorities. However any infusion would be strictly based on the need to ensure that it may not seen as "easy money" by the markets. (Governance and Institutions)

15. Gruh Finance, the affordable housing finance arm of mortgage lender HDFC, will be merged with Bandhan Bank -the newest commercial bank. The move would help the latter to cut promoter stake from 82.3% to 61%. 568 equity shares of face value of Rs.10 each of Bandhan Bank is to be issued for every 1,000 equity shares of a face value of Rs. 2 each of Gruh. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals. The swap ratio implies a 2.05% premium to the shareholders of Gruh. The combined entity is valued at Rs. 84,000 crore. (Indian Economy)
