2. The SC refused the Gujarat government's request to keep under wraps the final report filed by the apex court-appointed "Justice (retired) H.S. 4. According to the Global Economic Prospects report & World Bank forecasts, India’s GDP is expected to grow at 7.3% in the fiscal year 2018-19, and 7.5% in the following two years. The bank attributed it to an upswing in consumption and investment. It said India will continue to be the fastest growing major economy in the world. China’s economic growth is projected to slow down to 6.2% each in 2019 and 2020 and 6% in 2021. (Indian Economy)

The United Nations appealed to Myanmar for peaceful solution amid troop build-up in Myanmar's troubled Rakhine state. Myanmar is increasing the number of troops there, after some clashes between armed rebels and national security forces. Leader Aung San Suu Kyi is under fire for not doing enough to stop the "genocide" and its aftermath against the Rohingyas. (United Nations)

6. Giving a major push to develop and enhance tourism infrastructure in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a Gangajal Project worth Rs.2880 crore to improve water supply. 7. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) expelled its parliamentarian Saumitra Khan hours after the Bishnupur MP in Bankura joined the BJP in New Delhi on January 09 ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections. CM Mamata Banerjee's party has also expelled its another young MP Anupam Hazra of Bolpur Lok Sabha constituency for anti-party activities fuelling speculation that he might follow the footsteps of Khan soon. 8. Mr. Shah Faesal, who became first Kashmiri ever to top the highly competitive IAS exam in 2009, resigned from the IAS service! 10. For the second time in a row, Japan retained its top spot as the world's most powerful passport in 2019, according to the "Henley Passport Index". 11. Australia considerd giving asylum to an 18-year-old Saudi woman who fled to Thailand, saying she feared her family, which she accused of abuse, would kill her. For that matter, the Foreign Minister of Australia Marise Payne was in Bangkok on January 9. 12. Uncertainty over the outcome of China-U.S. trade talks brought gloom over Asian markets as both sides (US and China) kept mum about what lies ahead. Most Asian markets opened lower after the talks wrapped up the day before without clear indications of whether progress was made on resolving a dispute over Chinese technology policies that has the world’s two biggest economies embroiled in a bruising trade war. 14. In a diplomatic initiative to address the lingering conflicts and mistrust in the Gulf region, Iran proposed a new platform for regional peace building. Delivering a major speech at the "Raisina Dialogue" in India, its foreign minister Javad Zarif said such a forum should offer membership to countries based on a set of general principles to address real issues that affect people of the region and the world. (Regional Politics)

15. The CJI Ranjan Gogoi nominated his number two judge in the Supreme Court, Justice A.K. Sikri, to represent him in the high-power committee (HPC) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider the question of divestment of powers of CBI Director Alok Verma.
