  1. The freshly created 10% quota for poorer sections in general category (EWS) stands challenged in the Supreme Court. A petition was filed by Youth For Equality organisation and Kaushal Kant Mishra, which seeks the quashing of the Bill, saying that the economic criterion cannot be the sole basis for reservation.   2. Former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit was appointed the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, days after Ajay Maken resigned from the post citing ill health. Ms. Dikshit would be assisted by three working presidents — Devender Yadav, Haroon Yusuf and Rajesh Lilotia. Sheila Dikshit was the leader for Congress in the region for a long time, and her return is being seen in the context of upcoming LS elections 2019. (Indian Politics / People and Personalities)

Britain's biggest carmaker Jaguar Land Rover will cut around 4,500 jobs, mainly in its home market, as it tries to tackle a slowdown in China and a slump in demand for its diesel-powered vehicles. Britain’s main opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn on January 10, at an electronic components factory at Wakefield in northern England, called for a general election to resolve the deadlock in Parliament over Brexit, arguing that he would renegotiate the agreement with Brussels if he came to power. The terms of Brexit have become a trouble for Britain, as no agreement is reached internally, as EU sticks to its guns. March 29, 2019 is the deadline for Brexit to kick in.   7. The Winter Session of Parliament concluded, with 5 Bills passed by both the Houses. The productivity of Lok Sabha was 47% and that of Rajya Sabha 27%. Passing of 124th Constitutional Amendment Bill by both Houses was touted as a historical achievement of this Session, as it provides for reservations in government jobs and education on economic basis for the first time.   8. The CBI Director Alok Verma was fianlly ousted by the PM-led panel (High Powered Committee) within a day of his being reinstated by the Supreme Court, after a 3 month long suspense!   9. After West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, the Congress-led Chhattisgarh government withdrew the general consent accorded to the CBI to probe cases in the state. With, this CBI would know require permission of the state government to conduct raids and probe in Chattisgarh. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announced that the state is pulling out of the Centre's Ayushman Bharat scheme, accusing the Narendra Modi-led NDA government of "playing dirty politics" under the garb of the health coverage programme. Adultery and homosexuality have been decriminalised in the country by the Supreme Court (Section 377 of the I.P.C.), but the Army is “conservative” and they will not be allowed to “perpetuate into the Army,” Army chief General Bipin Rawat said. “It is hard to argue in these times. But the Army is conservative. We have neither modernised nor Westernised… we can still take action against people." The Army Chief had recently argued against women in front combat roles. Tata Consultancy Services, India’s largest software exporters, reported a 24.1% growth in its third quarter net profit to Rs.8,105 crore compared to the year-earlier period even as on-site hiring dragged the margins down for the IT bellwether. The GST Council in its 32nd meeting — the last before the Budget — took a slew of decisions aimed at reducing the tax and compliance burden on small and medium enterprises, including increasing the threshold limit below which companies are exempt from GST, extending the Composition Scheme to small service providers, and allowing small companies to file annual returns.
