1. The SC entertained PILs challenging the Centre's notification authorising 10 agencies, including the CBI, ED, IB and NIA, to monitor and decrypt data from any private computer resource. The petitioners alleged that the, notification issued under section 69 of the IT Act, was a tool for the government to snoop on citizens and hence violated the right to privacy. 2. The Delhi police special cell charged former JNU student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar; Syed Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya with sedition, criminal conspiracy and other crimes in connection with a Feb, 2016 event at the university to protest against the hanging of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru. 3. The death toll of mega fauna continues in India. A total of 11 tigers, 13 lions and 49 elephants were killed in Railway accidents between 2016-18. Despite the advisory, and many others issued by conservationists and organisations, deaths of wild animals in road and railway accidents have continued unabated. In 2016, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC) released ‘Eco-friendly measures to mitigate impacts of linear infrastructure’, an advisory document for mitigating human-animal conflicts. 4. Navy divers have located the cockpit voice recorder of a Lion Air jet that crashed into the Java Sea in October, Indonesian officials said. This can possibly boost the accident investigation. Reporters were informed that remains of some of the 189 people who died in the crash were also discovered at the seabed location. (Infrastructure / Social Issues)

5. Thailand is set to deploy rainmaking planes to seed clouds in an effort to tackle the pall of pollution that has shrouded the capital in recent weeks. The weather modification technique involves dispersing chemicals into the air to aid cloud condensation, which should in theory result in rain. (Environment Ecology and Climate Change)

President Donald Trump threatened Turkey with economic devastation if it attacks a U.S.-allied Kurdish militia in Syria, weakening the Turkish lira and prompting sharp criticism from Ankara on January 14. Relations between the two NATO allies have been strained over U.S. backing for the Kurdish YPG, which Turkey views as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that is waging a decades-long insurgency on Turkish soil.  (Defence and Military / World Politics)

In one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, the southernmost part of Chile’s Patagonia region, scientists are studying whales, dolphins and algae in order to help predict how climate change will affect the world’s oceans. For the study, four researchers from the Austral University of Chile embarked from Punta Arenas for the remote Seno Ballena fjord. (Environment Ecology and Climate Change)

The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation will shortly award new regional connectivity routes under UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagarik) III, as per Union Minister for Commerce, Industry & Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu. 10. Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal has pumped in nearly Rs.150 crore in ride-hailing platform Ola, according to documents filed with the Corporate Affairs Ministry. The docs say that “... 70,588 fully and compulsorily convertible, cumulative ‘Series J’ Preference Shares,’ having face value of Rs.10 [with] the rights, privileges and preferences... is hereby allotted at a subscription price of Rs.21,250,”. 11. PM Modi received the 'prestigious' Philip Kotler Presidential award for his ‘outstanding leadership for the nation’ in New Delhi. 12. The second India-Myanmar bilateral Army exercise ‘IMBEX 2018-19’ commenced at Chandimandir military station in Haryana. IMBEX stands for – India-Myanmar Bilateral Military Exercise. A Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) audit report has revealed that at least 469 containers of hazardous waste, including live bombs, war material scrap and dangerous chemical waste, have been found at Inland Container Depots (ICDs) of the customs and Container Freight Stations (CFSs) in Mumbai, Rajasthan and Tughlakabad in Delhi. (Defence and Military / Governance and Institutions)
